I am proposing an exhibit that would tentatively be titled “New Orleans’ Spanish French Quarter.” Because most French colonial architecture was destroyed in a fire, the French Quarter’s built environment was almost entirely produced while under Spanish control, which may be a little known fact to many. I intend to highlight some key architectural/planning features in the Quarter while providing historical context. This may include providing a contrast with French colonial architecture by displaying what few buildings remain from that period and using descriptions/images I am able to pull from other sources. As I am going on a four day trip to New Orleans this term, I will have the opportunity to take nearly all of the pictures I’ll need for the exhibit. Depending on the flow of the exhibit as it comes together, I may include a segment on the cemeteries in New Orleans, since they are such a distinct built feature.
Reason For Building Exhibit?:
USP 385 Class - New Orleans was a natural pick since I will be visiting and will be able to take my own photos. So many people are familiar with images from the French Quarter, but are probably not familiar with this period of the city's history and the Spanish influences.
