A groundbreaking ceremony for the Hillsboro Intermodal Transit Facility (ITF) August (2009) parking structure was held at the construction site. U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, Mayor Jerry Willey, among other notable officials participated in the opening of the parking structure ceremony. The environmentally friendly features include solar powered spaces for bicycles. Incorporated is a 60kW roof-top solar array producing three times the amount of energy needed to light the garage during the day.
A Bikestation addition encourages the use of active transportation alternatives. The Hillsboro parking structure is an energy model that facilitates integrated opportunities to conserve resources through the use of energy efficient alternatives such as solar power.
The 60kW roof-top solar array reduces energy loads even further when LED lamps are combined with solar energy to provide more light output while consuming overall 82% less power than allowed by the Oregon Energy Code.
The combination of the solar array and the LED lamps reduce maintenance costs and minimize the waste stream. On sunny days, the output of the roof-top solar array exceeds 30% of the power required to light the facility.
