A general view of downtown Portland
Portland, Oregon, is a town that has many colorful nicknames; the Rose City, P-Town, Bridge City, PDX, and Stumptown are a few that instantly come to mind. While the origin of some of these names may be obvious, such as Bridgetown (Portland has many bridges), others may not be. Take for example Stumptown; looking around Portland, people may notice a curious lack of stumps and an odd abundance of trees for a place with such a nickname. This, of course, brings up the question of origin: Why is Portland called Stumptown? Let's explore this question, as well as some of the cultural impacts Portland's moniker has had on the city.
